Model: Trinity Bridge, Crowland

A most unusual bridge in Crowland, Lincolnshire, easily worth a special trip for any bridge enthusiast.

The plaque reads: “Originally of wooden structure, the bridge was first mentioned in a charter of King Edred in 943. The present bridge dates from the 14th Century built between 1360 - 1390 and is constructed in Ancaster Limestone. The seated figure is thought to be that of Christ or King Ethelbald and is possibly from the West Front of the Abbey.

“Built at a point where the Welland divided, it was the means of ?crossing at the junction of the streams.”

The Welland has since moved, and the bridge stands over dry land in the centre of the town.
